This period, from the end of the Venetian Occupation in 1797 until the murder of Ioannis Capodistrias in 1831 in Nafplio, was decisive for the political consolidation of the Ionian Islands. The French Revolution had brought new ideas to the forefront or had given new meaning to words that were already in use: nation, citizen, freedom, equality, civil rights, all entered the political vocabulary of the Ionians, especially during the short-lived occupation by the Republican French (1797-1799). Familiarity with these concepts would lead to the founding of new institutions and bring the vision of a new homeland nearer to realisation, initially, with the founding of the Septinsular Republic (1800-1807), and then, the founding of the Greek state following the Greek Revolution.
